What was the first Kubrick film that you saw? How old were you? What did think of it?

The first Kubrick that I saw was "The Shining". Wow, what a great film. I think I was in High School at the time, so it was a while ago, but it still stays with you. The style was incredible.

Now that being said, my favorite is Dr. Strangelove. I think that Peter Sellers was an absolute genius.
I agree that "The Shining" resonates with you for awhile. The main thing I love about Kubrick films is his ability to create a wonderful sense of mood. "The Shining" is a perfect example with a very isolated, lonely, often times disturbing atmosphere about it. Even his comedy "Dr. Strangelove" has a wonderfully Kubrickian mood.
I don't remember
Then what is your favorite Kubrick film and why?
Mine was Clockwork Orange. Malcolm was so frightening to me! The subject matter sticks with you after you watch this and his performance does as well. I was more impressed with this movie after having watched it with a friend of mine who speaks russian and who let me in on what the hell was being said where there are no subtitles. It made much more sense instead of just being a very violent film for me. I went from thinking it was disturbing, which is not a bad thing, to having a better understanding of it after this... and after a little bit of growing up.
It does take a more mature, educated mind to fully appreciate "A Clockwork Orange" and to not simply think its just a film about rape, ultraviolence and Beethoven. Which it is, but its so much more than that too. Every time I watch it, there is something new that becomes clearer. I believe that was Kubrick's intentions with this film.
Believe it or not, "A Clockwork Orange" is one that I have not seen. I need to rent it, and quickly.
Clockwork is my favorite. I hated it when I first saw it... I was only looking at the violence but I watched it with someone who speaks russian and he filled me in on what was being said AND I watched it with more grown up eyes. I love that film now. You have to see it!
I remember the first time I watched 2001. I was blown away. One of the most innovative films of all time. I loved how most of the time Kubrick used the Ozu camera technique and kept it steady while the actors and environment embraced the film and did so much within it. I also realized how many people there are that pretend to like 2001.
Kubrick is by far a god in my world. I actually have the Kubrick collection, but I plan on getting some of his earlier films such as "Lolita" and "Barry London" which I have yet to see.

Clockwork and Eyes Wide Shut are probably my top two, but since it seems like Kubrick hits every genre with a solid movie, it is hard to choose a favorite. With Clockwork, like earlier said it is for an educated mind, and I saw it as a sophomore in high school...it literally scared the crap out of me in a way it freed my mind about movies. I dug deeper into this movie realizing that it goes far beyond just being about sex and violence but today's society. Granted that this was made in the 1970's and is supposed to take place in the future of Britain. I felt as if Government involvement was the biggest theme throughout the entire movie, and the characterization of Alex and his droogs, but also the people he affected throughout his conquest.

So well done, I wish I would have met him. Great director.
