I went to the Wednesday, January 27 Screening of Dear John at the Lincoln Square. This was a train wreck even worst than the Sherlock Holmes event at Northgate. I have never seen a bigger mess for a screening in my life.
They started with us in the main lobby and then move the very noisy crowd down a hallway to the theater entrance. The crowd grew to 275 with many loud, pushy younger people. There was no line enforcement so the whole walkway became jammed and people just pushed by to get to get to the front. All the screenings I have attended have folks line up against the wall 1-2 people wide. This was not done at the Lincoln Cinema. So the screening was scheduled to start at 7:00pm and no one is let in the theater. It is 7:15p and the theater staff chats to themselves yet tells not one what is going on. It is now 7:20pm and they start to let people in. It is a mob scene with everyone pushing forward into a narrow doorway. The Theater manager is there and does noting. People are angry with the long 2 hour wait and hassle try to defend their place in line.
The rumor is that there is trouble with a code to get the movie to show.
They seat about 3/4 of the theater and stop. Again no communication to anyone waiting. At 7:35 they start seating again. Finally everyone is seated at 7:50pm. They turn away about 75 people at the door who have waited nearly 2 hours. Inside we wait to 7:55pm and the announce they will NOT be showing Dear John. The film is NOT going to show after all that pushing and shoving. They offer a free pass for a movie in the future that has 4 restrictions listed on it.
For us this is where the screenings are just not worth the hassle! Mismanagement of the theaters and the promotion of the number of passes released is getting worse.
Reflecting, for $10 we can see the movie when we want, at the location we want, have a great seat and not go through this experience that shows the worst in people.
By the way the did sell plenty of concessions to the tired, hungry waiting crowd and that is the only money they make on a screening so Lincoln Square management was most likely please when they rolled up the numbers which is all they count in the end.

yeah. i didn't get into the avitar screening, but i did get into the sherlock one, and organizationally, that was a trainwreck. i've never seen a bigger mess in my life, and i've worked for SIFF, when we had to tell patrons the movie didn't arrive. i was utterly gobsmacked at the ineptitude, and lack of professionalism. i don't know which theater you were in, dave, but the screening started more than an hour late. and this after being chided for not being there at 3 (!). it really isn't that difficult a task. it's a matter of numbers, and informing the people in line of the situation. if you tell people what is going on, they are generally willing to help, and a little less grumpy.

Avatar and Sherlock Holmes...
I want to take a moment to thank the TMC for their efforts in bringing a resource or path in getting passes to Avatar in the Seattle area! However, it was very disappointing to see that the screening for Avatar was EXTREMELY light...meaning, it appeared that there was less than 400 people in line for the screening...which really put me at a loss as to why this wasn't at the Pacific Center and why EVERYONE that signed up, didn't get passes?!?!

I don't speak for TMC so I ask that you don't take my comments and insight as the fact or something that was set in stone, but if it came down to a matter of the various promoting groups wanting to have their hands in the Avatar pie so to speak, then that's fine, but this film could have easily had been screened at both the Science Center and Pacific Place. Plus I also wonder how many people were turned away or confused with the 7:30 start time on some passes and 7:00 on others?

Then you take last nights screening of Sherlock Holmes (which TMC had no involvement in) OMG! That was such a disorganized chaos! I'm sure that almost 200 people must have been sent away disappointed as the screening was held in 2 tiny theaters that probably held 150-200 people tops in each.

So in short..one big movie with lots of extra seats...and one big movie with no where near enough seats...

I ask that promoters and agencies really take more thought in pass distribution vs screening site + demand to prevent this level of disappointment or mass turn aways in the future. I know TMC probably got pushed out of the Avatar screening location through no fault of their own as TMC is still a young agency in the Seattle area, but you get a larger group (which I won't name out of professionalism) that will take a larger sum of the seats for the screening and then do a very poor job on the distro to fill those seats... so thank you again TMC, we all understand it can be difficult at times to secure these events and make everyone happy.

The organization and pull together of this group is amazing. Hopefully Sin Citizens will someday grow like this.

They always give out more passes than there are seats so I don't understand why nobody from the club are getting passes via email or text message.

Same here. I did not get an Avatar invite nor did two of my friends. So far nobody has said that they received an invite.

It's only 7 1/2 hrs until Avatar starts in Seattle. I still haven't received the email ticket. Has anyone else received theirs?
