Where the Wild Things Are

Walking out of the theater, it seemed as if I was the only person not lauding this movie. Indeed, my 11-year-old daughter cried at the end, and she rarely does that. In contrast, I could barely contain my yawns midway through and was eager for the movie to end. Even the sense of immediacy conveyed by the hand-held camerawork was not enough to engage me. Perhaps it would have helped if I had read the book. But growing up in England, I was raised with Enid Blyton and Commander Biggles, not King…See More

My Sister's Keeper -- controlling or letting go

The first murderer, when confronted with the question, "Where is your brother?" lied, "I don't know." Then added, in a gesture of angry denial, "Am I my brother's keeper?" This story, of course, comes from the opening chapters of the Bible (Gen. 4:8-9), and highlights the bonds of sibling care and dependence that were expected from Cain (the murderer) and his brother Abel. Similar sibling bonds form the foundation of the…See More

The Proposal -- the value of family

Take a driven and pushy workaholic book editor. Add in a pretty executive assistant 12-years younger (at least in real-life). Make the successful editor a Canadian whose visa expired and is about to be deported. Solution: marry the young American and voila life's a peach. That's the storyline of The Proposal. Except Fletcher throws in a giant role reversal and makes the editor a woman, Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), and her assitant is Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds, Definitely Maybe). To finish…See More

Imagine That -- listening, leading, liking your kids

"I want my goo-gah!" exclaims a wild and upset Eddie Murphy as he is forcibly ejected from a plush Denver home. Thus opens Imagine That. So what is a "goo-gah"? And why does he want it so badly? The movie goes back in time one week to answer these questions. To finish this review, go to the Mosic Movie Connect Group blog.See More

The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 -- confession, ransom and redemption

Tony Scott, brother of Ridley, has teamed up with Denzel Washington before in action movies, such as Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, and Deja Vu. Now they are reunited in the remake of this 1974 crime thriller. As remakes go, this is a good one.To finish this blog go to my full review at Mosaic Movie Connect Group.See More

Terminator Salvation -- friends and enemies, and saviors

"I'll be back." Arnold Schwarzenegger immortalized this in the original Terminator movie. In this "final" film it is repeated, this time by hero John Connor (Christian Bale, The Dark Knight). Ironically, the conclusion leavies the franchise open to be back again. This particular…See More

Monsters vs. Aliens -- family, friends and normalcy of Ginormica

The latest animated feature from Dreamworks is so-so. Oh, without doubt it has great animation. In one scene a character has just been running and you can see her chest rise and fall rapidly with her breathing. It's details like this that set this and other recent animated features apart from cartoons.Yet, this movie never really drew me in. The monsters and characters were too distant. Susan, the heroine, is too whiny throughout. And the plot seemed too familiar and derivative. Even the…See More
