i can't help but crack up when i think of this movie. VIVA is a low budget, very independent film by anna biller. it's a strangely impressive film, not for the acting or the story, which i'm assuming were purposefully wooden, no it's impressive that someone-- even in this age of digital cameras-- could make a low budget film that's an almost pitch perfect 70's period piece. visually everything is nigh perfect-- the sets are dead ringers, down to the magazines, and nail colors, even the men wear… Continue

i suppose i ought to start out by saying my least favorite movie genre is the coming of age tales. my movie buddy teases me about it because it's such an unusual choice. normally people say, romances, comedies, sci-fi etc. for me, nothing chaps my hide more than coming of age. usually they are (recent) period pieces, super saccharine, and paint a rosy picture of what for me atleast was way more than a season in hell. now that i got that out of the way, let me go on to how i would normally… Continue

i'll be honest, i've only seen a handful of silent movies, 5, maybe 6, so i'm no expert. i was expecting something between the dramas i had seen or, perhaps the fantastic, funny stunt work of buster keaton, but THE FRESHMAN was a comedy of it's own type, closer to chaplin, but unlike charlie, lloyd is perfectly fine playing the fool. and h's so much fun to watch.
