Here is the continuation of my movie awards. This was delayed due to seeing if there was any last minute summer movies that could creep up on the list (and it did for the worst as always). Of course, I endured the pain and suffering of watching the shitty movies (also there are hidden gems here and there) so you don't have to but if you are brave enough you can go judge for yourself.
Best Sci-Fi Movie of 2011- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
First off, why do we need a long ass fucking title for this movie? Do the studios think we are dumb that they had to include "Planet of the Apes" in the title so that we know that it is a POTA movie? Just call it Rise of the Apes, we know what it is and make it short and simple, please, stop confusing us. Wasn't expecting much out of this movie, came away surprised and yet satisfied. My only question is, WTF HAPPENED TO FREIDA PINTO AT THE END OF THE MOVIE? PLEASE HELP ME! I AM GOING CRAZY TRYING TO FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT! She let James Franco go back to get Caesar and poof she was never seen again. I was expecting a final embrace and a kiss and her saying "thank god your still alive." Instead Caesar is leaning into James Franco and saying, "Caesar is home," then swinging from tree to tree and looking over San Francisco. Great work by Andy Serkis should definitely get a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Honorable Mention- Super 8
A big fan of J.J. Abrams since his Alias days. Alot of plot holes in this movie but all-around a good time. Didn't really care for the Steven Spielberg signature whimpy ending either but a nice throwback to the 80's. Probably the second best looking alien this summer except Attack of the Blocks much taller Critters from the 80's look-alike aliens with the glowing teeth.
Worst Sci-Fi Movie of 2011- Cowboys & Aliens
Where did this movie go wrong? First off the aliens did not look impressive and looked very plain. The beginning of the movie started off good, as soon as Harrison Ford enters the movie it starts taking a drastic nosedive. Has Harrison Ford done anything worth watching in this decade? I know he is an icon from his 80's movies he was in from Star Wars and Indiana Jones (except the last one) and his Jack Ryan movies in the 90's but can you name me one movie he did this decade that you would go back and watch again? I came back to maybe What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer back in 2000 and thats giving him the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile Jon Favreau has now made two straight stinkers (this and Iron Man 2) WTF is going on? Hate to say this, but glad he is not onboard with Iron Man 3 don't want another reboot like Hollywood likes to do when the ships starts sinking. This movie had a great supporting cast but didn't make use of there talents. Sam Rockwell, Clancy Brown, Buck Taylor etc. are excellent actors but had very little roles in this movie. Some of the supporting cast where captured by the aliens and lost out on there talent until the end of the movie and by that time I was just ready to get the fuck out of there.
Best Villian/ Best Actor- Dominic Cooper as Uday Hussein and Latif Yahia from The Devil's Double
Before this movie, I have never heard of Dominic Cooper. As I was watching the first third of this movie, I realized it was the same actor playing both parts. That's how good Dominic Cooper was and how mesmerizing his performance is. Uday Hussein was Saddam Hussein's sadistic son/prince who basically does whatever he wants and whoever he wants he gets. No remorse in his actions and just cold-blooded all around. Latif Yahia is the look-alike that Uday hires (actually forces/threatens) to be his double. This movie made Saddam Hussein look PG that's how sinister Uday is. This is also my honorable mention for Best Movie of the Summer and Dominic Cooper should get a Best Actor nomination or it would be a travesty.
Worst Villian- Hank Azaria as Gargamel from The Smurfs
How much did Hank Azaria get offered to be in this garbage? How the fuck does this movie make over $100 Million and $250 Million Worldwide? I know it was a part of my childhood in the 80's and hate seeing Hollywood destroy everything that I grew up watching . If I had a kid and they asked me to take them to see this I would ground there lil' ass until they were a teenager followed by endless hours of watching the original cartoon. No need to delve into how horrible this is just stay away from it like a spoiled fish.
Best Horror Movie of 2011- Wake Wood
Not alot of horror movies came out this summer so I am going to recommend a hidden little gem that came out on DVD. I know it has it's flaws but it is alot better than the alternatives out there. Basically, a couple moves to a little creepy town after the death of there daughter and the couple finds out weird things about the town. Eerily reminded me of The Wicker Man, the original one with Christopher Lee not the shitty Nicolas Cage one.
Worst Horror Movie of 2011- Final Destination 5
Why do people keep going to watch these movies? Oh yeah the deaths. Sinister sons of bitches I tell you. First off, how flimsy was the damn bridge that it would just collapse because of a wind? Go figure. This franchise hasn't been relevant since the original one (which I loved). The last 2 sequels probably should cement it that it just gets worse and worse but you can guarantee the franchise will keep churning out logs of turds shaped like Death's pitchfork. Second, if I hear a John Denver- Rocky Mountain High song I know it is time to get the fuck out of dodge. Anywhere in the world! Guaranfuckingtee! Third, how come they have "rules" and never follow the damn pattern that Death goes by. Only thing that kept me halfway amused was the performance of a Christian Bale look-a-like (but with Tom Cruise's height) acting like he was channeling Christian Bale in American Psycho near the end of the movie. Just awful. Please. Kill. Me. Now.
Best Emma Stone Movie- The Help
I have to admit that I have not seen Friends With Benefits yet but I doubt it can compete against The Help or Crazy, Stupid, Love. The Help is a sad yet engaging movie that I probably can only watch once. It will have all your expressions come out in this movie. Loved Octavia Spencer as Minny in this movie. Very hilarious yet sassy you don't want to be on her shit list is all I am saying. All around great cast. Question of the day: Do you think Lindsay Lohan would have gotten Emma Stones parts if she didn't take the path of drugs? Only problem I had with Crazy, Stupid, Love. was the middle portion was dragging when Carrell and Gosling weren't hanging out together. Is Steve Carrell going to be known as Mr. Romantic Comedies only? I want him to be a killer in a horror movie, do something outside your comfort level please stretch the acting skills.
