Boys will be boys, is a lesson I learned from Chronicle.
This may have been interesting, but for me, hand-held camera creates shaky point of view atmosphere and shaky film.
I for one am not enamored by the look of hopping between camera angles to get the feel of what it may pick up, as you tend to get a bit queasy, but I suppose the choice to show the film only through the peeping of an available lens was resourceful… yet gets old far too quickly.
Three high school lads find a mysterious hole in the ground and curiosity gets the better of them and they explore to find something we all wish we could find when coming across some new discovery. Yes. I always wished I could have stumbled across the answers to the universe or the fountain of youth, but if I happened by something inexplicable, chances are, it would be the site of a new landfill, not an alien species readying me for their master plan be it good or bad, like Andrew (Dane DeHaan), Matt (Alex Russell) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan) do, with fine performances, I might add.
The discovery enables them to use their minds to raise a car, but never their conscientiousness and this is their ultimate downfall. What they eventually learn is that the superpowers they now have are far beyond what they can control and flying through the air may not be the best thing to do before growing to a certain point in life. Instead, they spend the movie clutching for themselves what only they want and dream of. Andrew becomes angrier and angrier as time progresses and is left empty and alone when his friends and family numbers drop and life through the looking glass isn't as merry as it once appeared.
You will be absorbed by the undeniable excitement of the picture, for who wouldn’t want to have the ability to project themselves into the sky and mess with the minds of those around us, especially those who truly deserve it? But you may be disappointed in the overused, overplayed, over the top means by which director Josh Trank uses to try and pull you in.
