I would call this the summer of mediocrity in movies not alot of movies stood out but plenty of piles of heaping shit out there (ahem*smurfs*ahem), comic movies galore, raunchy comedies, and oh yeah fucking sequels until we are transformed into a sorry ass yellow Camaro. So I thought I would hand out my awards for what I liked and what has been gnawing at me all summer.
Best Movie of the Summer- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part II
I am not the biggest David Yates fan, matter of fact, I hated all of the Harry Potter movies that he did up until this movie. Felt like he just dragged the movies along at a glacial pace. This is the one movie that he didn't fuck up and got it surprisingly right. Of course my complaints are that the final battle between Voldemort vs. Potter was more of a whimper and not a epic fight as I had hoped for. If Voldemort's wand wasn't working why couldn't he just pulverize the kid? Also didn't care too much for the 19 years later crap. Why is it after every Harry Potter movies final battle it is followed by a 20 minutes of nonstop talking before the movie ends? Just end the damn movie no need for a recap or a wrap up.
Best Comic Book Movie of 2011- Captain America: First Avenger
I went back and forth with this one (and X-Men) because none of the movies was on the elite level like Iron Man or Spider-Man I & II. I felt they were just setting up for the Avengers movie next summer (god I hope Joss Whedon gets it right). I was skeptical with Chris Evans as the lead but with a superb supporting cast Evans stepped up his game. First half of the movie was slow from the skinny Steve up until the USO tour. Then the movie started to hit its stride afterwards. Not sure how they would do a sequel since they are now in the present time which would lose the uniqueness of the Captain America movie. Would love to see Bucky come back as the Winter Soldier and beat the living shit out of Captain America.
Honorable Mention- X-Men: First Class
Not the biggest of fan of Fox for doing a shitty Wolverine movie and a shitty X-Men: Last Stand. They had nowhere else to go but start the damn franchise over. From the original comic to the movies, only the Beast appears in this movie minus Jean Gray, Angel, Cyclops and Iceman which made me put it a peg below CA. Still pissed that they had Beast and a bunch of second rate mutants. Michael Fassbender's portayal Magneto is the real reason to watch this movie. He along with Kevin Bacon carries this movie and probably the second best X-Men movie in the franchise. Still scratching my head on James McAvoy as Professor X and how he would turn into Patrick Stewart is beyond my comprehension.
Worst Comic Book Movie of 2011- Green Lantern
This is the movie that I was anxious to see out of all the movies that came out this summer. Wow, what a piece of shit this turned out to be. Some things that did work where the outerspace moments, Sinestro & loved Kilowog. Didn't care for the Earth portions of this movie as it just slowed the pace down. All my hopes for a Justice League movie went down the fucking shit hole with this movie. It will be another 10-20 years before DC Comics/Warner Bros. ever get there shit together (at the earliest too). Will settle for a Aquaman or a Flash movie is all I ask for.
Best Comedy of the Summer - Bridesmaids
When I saw the trailer, I was thinking it would just be Hangover for Women. Boy was I wrong and it took me a couple weeks from when it was first released for me to go watch it (that's how skeptical I was). Only thing I hated was Maya Rudolph, she has got to be the ugliest bride I have ever scene in a fucking movie. Everytime she was in a scene I had to put my thumb out to cover her fucking horse face. Couldn't they find a better actress than her to be a bride? Kirsten Wiig has been gold in almost every movie she has been in (except Macgruber we will let that one slip). Loved Melissa McCarthy's character as the aggressive Megan (aka the fat chick). I have never noticed her in a movie up until now but she had me rolling. Can't wait to see her in future comedies.
Worst Comedy of the Summer- Zookeeper
Where do I start? This is horrible on many different levels. Adam Sandler's voice for the monkey sounds like a chain-smoking 60-year-old man. Sly Stallone's voice coming out of a lion had me cringe at every moment he opened his mouth. At least Maya Randolph was a better visual as a giraffe but the voice. Aye! Also a TGIF loving gorilla driving and eating in a restaurant? WTF? Just kill me now and put me out of my fucking misery.
